Your son or daughter may be doing everything they're supposed to do in school. But do they know where it's all leading?

Maybe they're in high school, trying to figure out what to study and where to go next. Or maybe they're already in college, working toward a degree but still unsure what they want to do with their future.

Either way, you want to help them make good decisions. But that's becoming harder than ever.

For generations, the path seemed fairly straightforward. Work hard, get good grades, go to college, earn a degree, and find a good job.

Today, that path isn't so simple.

AI is changing careers at a pace few could have predicted. College is more expensive than ever. And many graduates are discovering that earning a degree doesn't necessarily mean they're prepared for what comes next.

In fact, research has found that 52% of graduates are working in jobs that don't require a bachelor's degree one year after graduation.

So how do you help your son or daughter find direction and prepare for a future that's changing so quickly?

That's the question at the heart of Direction.

Rather than recommending one type of career for your student to pursue, this book gives you a practical way to help them understand themselves, discover possibilities they may never have considered, and make more thoughtful decisions about their future.

At its center is the E.A.R. Method™, a three-step process designed to help your student move from uncertainty toward a clearer direction.

Inside Direction, You'll Discover:

  • The 10 questions that could reveal something surprising about how prepared your student really is for their future. Most parents assume they know where their son or daughter stands. But the answers may tell a very different story.
  • The one mistake many families make before their student even chooses a direction, and why it can affect nearly every decision that follows. It's a mistake that's easy to make, even when you're doing everything you think you're supposed to do.
  • Why discovering one natural ability your student may not even know they have could change the careers they consider. What does Shaquille O'Neal have to do with this? The connection may surprise you.
  • The hidden reason your student could love what they're studying but end up unhappy in the career it leads to. It's something many people don't discover until they're already working, and it has little to do with salary.
  • The surprisingly simple way to narrow dozens of possible careers into a few that actually fit your student. There's a better way to make this decision than following their friends, chasing the highest salary, or simply trusting their gut.
  • Why most families may be preparing for the wrong threat when it comes to AI and their student's future. The biggest challenge might not be the careers that disappear, but something far less obvious that could change how students enter the workforce.
  • Why hiring leaders ranked a student with a perfect 4.0 GPA last, and the one thing they valued more. The answer may change what your student focuses on long before they start applying for jobs.

From Uncertainty to a Clearer Way Forward

Finding direction doesn't mean your student needs to know exactly what they'll be doing for the next 40 years.

It means understanding their strengths, discovering fields worth exploring, and knowing how to take the next step.

For your student, that might mean discovering a career they never knew existed. Or realizing the major they've chosen isn't the right fit. If they're already in college, it might mean identifying the skills and experiences they need before graduation.

Whatever their starting point, the goal is the same: to help your student make decisions with greater confidence and prepare for opportunities that fit who they are.

And you don't need to have all the answers to help make that happen.

Written specifically for parents of high school and college students, Direction combines practical guidance, real-world examples, and a clear process you can work through together.

Your purchase also includes access to a companion online course, with tools and exercises that help your student apply what they're learning and begin building their own plan.

About the Author

I'm Richard Harris, and I've had the opportunity to see the journey from high school to college to career from two very different perspectives.

I began my career as a high school counselor, helping students navigate college admissions, choose schools, and prepare for life after high school.

Later, I spent 10 years as Director of College Recruiting for two multibillion-dollar companies, where I led teams that hired thousands of college students and recent graduates into internships and full-time positions.

What I discovered was that getting into college and earning a degree didn't always mean students were prepared for what came next.

I saw bright, hardworking students who had done everything they were supposed to do academically, yet struggled to explain what they wanted to pursue or how their education had prepared them for a career.

And I realized something important: We spend an enormous amount of time helping students get into college, but often far too little helping them figure out where that education should lead.

That's why I wrote Direction.

I wanted to give you, as a parent, a practical way to help your son or daughter make these important decisions, even if you're not sure where to begin yourself.

My hope is that this book will help you have better conversations, ask better questions, and guide your student toward a future that fits their strengths, interests, and goals.
